GADSDEN, AL – August 29, 2025 – The Etowah County Commission announced today that effective Monday, September 1, 2025, it will begin directly providing Emergency Management Services to the citizens of Etowah County, in partnership with its local municipalities.
The Commission originally established the Etowah County Emergency Management Agency (ECEMA) in 1984, with service being provided through the Gadsden-Etowah EMA, but will now transition its operations in-house. Plans are underway to appoint an agency director, establish new offices, and open an Emergency Operations Center at the Etowah County Courthouse.
During the transition, Sheriff Jonathon Horton will serve as interim EMA Director, providing steady leadership until a permanent director is appointed. In addition, 911 Director Wil Reed and Etowah 911’s resources will continue supporting EMA operations both short and long-term.
Beginning September 1st, citizens may contact the Etowah County EMA directly at 256-549-5351 or by email at ema@etowahcounty.org. As always, if you need immediate, lifesaving assistance, dial 911.
